MARION Beulah Ledford Zirk, 91, of South Madison Street, Marion, passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at McDowell Hospital.

She was a native of Mitchell County, and the daughter of the late Walter and Myrtle McKinney Ledford.

She was a Homemaker and a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Dundalk, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Zirk, and brothers, Jack, Lane, Bill, and Virgil Ledford.

Survivors include her sisters, Altha Reel, of Marion, and Betty Ledford, of Hope Mills, and one brother, Dean Ledford, of Baltimore, Md.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Henline Hughes Funeral Home with Jeff Duncan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Middle River, Md. at a later date.

Fairview - Steven "Spanky" Anthony Ledford, 60, died Monday, January 9, 2011.

A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late James Napolean and Charlotte Sayles Ledford and was preceded in death by a nephew, Robbie Ledford. Spanky had many friends and never met a stranger because of his outgoing personality. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved all kinds of sports especially softball which he played for many years. He was a member of a hunting club in Whiteville and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Leicester. He attended A.C. Reynolds High School and AB Tech. Spanky was a former employee of the Biltmore Estate and Kunkle Valve Company.

He is survived by a sister, Judy Morgan and her husband, Gill of Fairview; a brother, James E. Ledford and his wife, Wanda of Chesnee, SC. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, Kelly and his wife, Arial of Knoxville, Chad Ledford of Asheville, Kristi McLain of Clearwater, Florida, Jessy Ledford of Hendersonville, Anton Morgan and his wife, Ana of Faiview, Liliana and Analaura of Fairview.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview with the Reverend Stanley Adcock officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at Victory Baptist Church, S. Orchard Road in East Flat Rock.

Jeffery Franklin Ledford Sr.

BELMONT - Jeffery Franklin Ledford Sr., 57, of Riverloop Road, passed away Dec. 28, 2011, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late W.D. And Thelma Mae Ferguson Ledford.

Mr. Ledford was a fixer for Pharr Yarns for 35 years.

He is survived by his son, Jeffery Ledford II and wife, Misty of Belmont; stepdaughter, Mary Elizabeth Baucom of Clover, SC; brother, William Ledford and wife, Lisa of Bessemer City; granddaughter, Karmen Jade Ledford; and nephew, Kenneth Ledford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Ledford.

Dewitt Malcum Ledford

GASTONIA - Dewitt Malcum Ledford, 90, died Dec. 18, 2011.

Born in Murphy, he was the son of the late John Alvin Ledford and Delmar Arp Ledford.

Mr. Ledford was a machinist with R.H. Bouligny and Westinghouse.

He served our country in the US Army in the Aleutians, Philippines and the Southern Pacific during World War II. He was a recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, 5 Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.

Mr. Ledford was a charter member of United Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and assisted with Bible School.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Garland Mull; brother, Alvin Ledford, Jr.; sisters, Mary Lou Walker, Flostine Davis and Willorae Ledford.

Survivors include his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Ruth Rogers Ledford; daughters and son-in-law, Karen Mull of Morganton and Linda and David Whisnant of Gastonia; grandchildren and spouses, Shelley Mull, Dr. Courtney Mull, Stuart and Katherine Mull, Cameron Mull, Karen and Jimmy Meek, Jennifer Graham, Brooke and Tobias Bem; great-grandchildren, Malcum Meek, Grant Meek, Harlie Graham and Gavin Graham; brothers and sister-in-law, K. Don Ledford of Gastonia, William Ledford of Kings Mountain and Johnny and Ann Ledford of Copperhill, TN; sisters and brother-in-law, Cuba-lee Layton of Atlanta, GA, Vaheda and Bill Pinkerton of Murphy and Vivian Campbell of Murphy; numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service beginning 1 p.m. Thursday in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gasto-nia. The Rev. Kelly Lowe will officiate.

Burial with military honors will follow in Gaston Memorial Park.

Edgar Lee Ledford, 85, of Fairview, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Fleshers Fairview Health and Retirement Center.

Edgar was a native of Yancey County and lived in Buncombe County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Walter C. and Dullie McMahan Ledford.

He was a United States Army Veteran, serving during WW II.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice Searcy Ledford; one daughter, Carolyn Lippard and her husband, Mike, of Fairview; one son, Kenneth Ledford and his wife, Tonya, of Fairview; one brother, Alvin Ledford of Oteen; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, December 1, 2011 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.

Interment will be held at noon on Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

Carroll Eugene "Gene" Ledford

Mr. Carroll Eugene "Gene" Ledford, 52, of Hildebran, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Catawba Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, following a brief illness. Gene was born on May 24, 1959 in Haywood County to the late Ernest Coleman and Viola Mae Black.

He was a veteran of the U. S Army, serving as a Ranger and in the 101st Airborne Division.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harley Ledford and Ronnie Ledford and one sister, Joyce Ann Ledford.

Survivors include his two brothers, Terry Ledford of Connelly Springs and Dale Ledford of Hildebran and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Walker Road Baptist Church in Morganton with the Revs. Charles Lewis and Brandon Ware officiating. Kim James Ledford, 59, passed away Nov. 18, 2011, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia.

He was born Oct. 26, 1952, in Gaston County, son of Irene Vanhorn Ledford and the late James Haven Ledford.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church, Gastonia.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

LEDFORD, Carl age 77, of Morgan Township, passed away at Hospice of Hamilton Wednesday evening, November 2, 2011. He was born on March 12, 1934 in Clay County, KY, the son of Thomas and Bertha (Burns) Ledford.

He was educated in the Clay County Schools.
On August 27, 1955, he married Mildred Gibson in Manchester, KY.
He worked most of his life as an over the road truck driver.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and coon hunting. He was a member of the Butler County Coon Hunters Association.

He is survived by his children, Tom (Darla) Ledford of Shandon, Carla Ledford of Morgan Township, Doug (Carrie) Ledford of Milville, Michele (John) Harris of Hamilton, Trace Ledford of Morgan Township, Sabrina (Mike) Stanifer of Morgan Township, Craig (Michelle) Ledford of Big Creek, KY, sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, three brothers, John, Paul, and Billy Ledford, and three sisters, Freda Couch, Grace Arnold, and Ruth Howard. He is also survived by many other loving relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, four brothers, Everett, Cecil, Arlie, and T.G., two sisters, Hester Mosely and Gladys Farmer, and his parents, Tommy and Bertha Ledford.

NEWTON-Major Lee Ledford, 82 of Startown Road, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at his residence.
Born Dec. 8, 1928, in Catawba County, he was the son, of the late Farris Rufus Ledford and Annie Bryte Hull Ledford.

Major loved God, his family and his church. He was a Army veteran and was a member of New Life Fellowship Church where he served as a head steward. Major had a passion for cars and worked 40 years at Century Furniture. He made over a dozen grandfather clocks in his personal time for his children and grand-children.

In addition to his wife, of 57 years, Faye Ledford of the home; two daughters, Nina Ledford Greene and husband, David of Newton and Pat Ledford Wilson and husband, Phillip of Newton; a son, Bob Ledford and wife, Prisca of Newton; a brother, Billy Vance Ledford and wife, Irene of Casar; six grand-children, Hanna Greene Edwards and husband, Brandon, Casey Ledford Mueller and husband, Wayne, Nicholas Wilson, Matthew Greene and wife, Hope, Erin Wilson, and Jordan Ledford, and three great-grand-children, Liam Mueller, Gabby Edwards and Samuel Greene survive him.

Two brothers, Homer Lee Ledford and Max Franklin Ledford preceded him in death.

Marvin R. Ledford, 76, formerly of Bryson City and longtime resident of Haywood County went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at his residence. He was the son of the late Jess and Annie Mae McGaha Ledford. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as Military Police. He was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He also was a volunteer for Haywood Christian Ministries for 15 years. He was a retired employee with Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Ledford.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Clark Ledford; one son, Mark Ledford and wife Cheryl of Greensboro, NC; two grandchildren, Morgan and Sarah Ledford.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Stillwell will officiate with burial in Holly Springs Cemetery.

Bobby Joe Ledford, 72, of 236 Glenn Crest Drive went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 11, 2011. He was the husband of Donna Sharlene Crisp Ledford for 50 years. and the son of the late Ernest Joe Ledford and Mary Matthews Ledford. He was of the Baptist Faith and a Navy veteran. He was employed by Atlanta Constitution and Ledford Distributing.

Survivors also include his two sons, Lane Ledford and his wife Tina of Duncan, SC, Jason Ledford and his wife Krystle of Reidville, SC; a daughter, Tammy Ledford Edwards and her husband Craig of Lyman, SC; a brother, Charles Ledford of Hermaston, OR; a sister, Edith Marona of Ashville, NC; six grandchildren, Lindsey Albaugh, Cale, Kortney and Oaks Ledford, Caden Edwards and Marley Ledford; three great-grandchildren, Lily Albaugh and Olivia and Johnny Ledford.

Mr. Calvin Woodrow Ledford, Sr., age 85, of Johnson City, passed away, Friday, November 11, 2011, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Ledford was a native of Chickasaw, Alabama. He was the son of the late James Garfield Ledford and Dora Belle Huskins Ledford. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Calvin W. Ledford Jr.; four brothers; and four sisters.

Mr. Ledford was a veteran of the Seabees in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Iron Workers #5 in Washington, DC, for sixty years. He was also Vice President of the Local and served on the executive board.

Mr. Ledford was a member for fifty-one years of the Jephthah Masonic Lodge #222 and a member of the Scottish Rite Temple in Washington, DC. He was also a member of the Shriners in Washington, DC.

Survivors include: his loving wife of sixty-five years, Helen E. Ledford, of the home; one son, John Michael Ledford, of Florida; four grandchildren, Calvin Ledford III, Kimberly Ledford, Kristen Ledford and Stacy Ledford Lanny; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mr. Calvin Woodrow Ledford Sr. will be conducted at 1 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Pastor James Nipper will officiate.

The entombment service will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The Boone Dam Post #4933 and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military rights.

Rev. Frank F. Ledford, 87, of Mt. Airy, GA, formerly of Murphy, died Saturday, November 5, 2011 at his residence. He was a native of Cherokee County, but had been living in Habersham County, GA for the past seven years. Frank had worked as a pipe fitter, and was a Baptist minister retiring from Grace Baptist Church in Doraville, GA. He was also a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Commerce, GA.

He was the son of the late William Ervin and Zadie Flora Loudermilk Ledford and the husband of the late Parilee Haney Ledford, who died September 30, 1966.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Stockton Mize; three daughters, Doris Raper and husband, Goldman of Murphy, Betty Louise Singleton of Lawrenceville, GA, and Gail Howard and husband, Dennis of East Sparta, OH; a step-son, Kale Mize of Clarkesville, GA; seven grandchildren, Todd Howard of Louisville, OH, Kimalee Tomblin of East Sparta, Jarrette Leonard of Rockmart, GA, Kathy Cliff of Athens, GA, Glenda Ware of Blue Ridge, GA, and Joann Moore and Debbie Brown, both of Murphy; and 16 great grandchildren.

MARION - William Carroll Ledford, 79, of Marion, passed away Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at Sunrise Rehab & Care Center in Nebo.

He was born May 29, 1932, in McDowell County to the late E.W. Ledford and Ora Lytle Ledford.

Mr. Ledford was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Nealsville Church of God and he retired from IAC in Old Fort.

Surviving Mr. Ledford are his wife, Frances Painter Ledford, of the home; his son, Mike Ledford and his wife, Debra Pool Ledford, of Marion; one brother, Edward Ledford, of Old Fort; two sisters, Christine Walker of Old Fort and Frances Slagle and her husband, Sonny, of Black Mountain; one granddaughter, Jennifer; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at Nealsville Church of God with the Revs. Doug Carpenter and Dean Owenby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Franklin, NC - Kenneth Ledford, age 75, of Franklin, NC passed away Monday, October 10, 2011. Born in Clay County, he was the son of the late Tom and Rose Garrett Ledford.
He was married to the late Lovada Taylor Ledford who passed away in July of 2010. He was a military veteran. Kenneth was a man of many skills and was a master of all trades. He was a family man. His family was the most important thing to him. He was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Miller and husband Jerry; Kathy Thompson; one son, Kenny Ledford all of Franklin, NC and three sisters, Glenda, Wanda and Nancy. Nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Ledford.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 14, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Windy Gap Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Windy Gap Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kyle Ledford, Kody Ledford, Brantley Williams, Justin Thompson, Breanna Kirchman-Aiello and Seth Ledford. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Williams and Brandie Mazzotta.

Amanda Violet Ledford Stulls, 92, of Marion, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at her residence with her loving family by her side.

A native of Mitchell County, she was born July 13, 1919, to the late Murdock Ledford and Lissie Pendley Ledford.

She was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. Amanda was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, David Oscar Stulls; one son, Ernest Stulls, and a daughter, Geneva Ward. She is survived by seven children, Grace Lowery, Samuel Oscar Stulls, Barbara Cable, Donald Stulls, Shelia Beam, Earl Stulls and Ronald Stulls; 20 grandchildren; 36 great- grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of West-moreland Funeral Home with the Revs. Milton Hollifield and Doug Woody officiating.

Roger L. Ledford, 69, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Ledford was a native of McVeigh, KY and had lived most of his life in Johnson City.

He was a son of the late Donald Talmadge Ledford and Vivian Louise Dillinger Ledford and was also preceded in death by three brothers, Patrick "Pat" Ledford, Donald Ledford and Ronald "Ronnie" Ledford and three sisters, Florence "Dimples" Ledford, Francis McCoy and Joyce Suiter.

Mr. Ledford was a US Navy Vietnam War veteran.

He retired from the Johnson City Fire Department.

Mr. Ledford was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church.

He loved fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Ann Rosenbaum; one daughter, Marvella Fields and her husband, Tim Johnson City, one son, Ronald "Ronnie" Ledford and his wife, Holly Rudy, Johnson City; three brothers, Alan Ledford, Beckley, VA, Paul Ledford, and Dennis Ledford both of Johnson City; three sisters, Carol Varney, Pikeville, KY, Emma Spivey, London, KY and Molly Hultquist, Asheville, NC; six grandchildren, Joshua "Josh" Fields, Derek Fields, Robert "Robbie" Fields, Latyn Fields, Tyler Wills and Carrie Ann Ledford all of Johnson City and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services.

A celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday from the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services. Military graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Dr. Mike Oaks will officiate. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his two youngest grandsons, Tyler Wills and Latyn Fields.

Elmer Lee Ledford, 77, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

A native of McDowell County, Mr. Ledford was born Sept. 27, 1933, to the late Lester and Polly Turner Ledford.
Saddened by the loss of Mr. Ledford are his wife of 59 years, Ruth Earle Ledford, of the home; three children, his daughter, Peggy Koone, and her husband, Jimmy, of Union Mills; daughter Wanda Hester, and her husband, Joe, of Marion, and his son, David Ledford, of Cull-owhee; his brother, Jack Ledford and his wife, Clara, of Marion; three grandchildren, Leslie Hester, of Marion; Elizabeth Rogers and her husband, Barron, of Waynes-ville, and Ethan Hester of Lynchburg, Va.

Joshua Clay Ledford, age 26, of Nebo, suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Mission Hospital. A native of Burke County he was born on December 11, 1984 to Timmy Ledford of Nebo and Crystal Jarrett Suttles of Morganton. He worked for Janesville Products in Old Fort. He was a very loving and dedicated father, son, and brother. He was very friendly and had no enemies. He was preceded in death by his great grandparents Guy and Edna Buchanan.

Saddened by this loss of Joshua, in addition to his parents, are a daughter Brooke Hodge of Nebo; step father Rick Suttles of Morganton; maternal grandparents Pete and Jeanette Jarrett of Morganton; paternal grandparents Clay and Helen Ledford of Nebo; siblings: Ricky Suttles and Tessa Suttles of Morganton, Adriane Ledford of Marion, Courtney Wilson of Sailsbury, and Chirs Buchanan of Nebo; special friend Jennifer Roland and her children Austin and Anna Roland.

Born in Macon County he was the son of the late Paul Thomas Ledford and Ida Patton Ledford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Wig, Lester, Bud, Lawrence and Buck. He was self employed in the construction business; was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Arbor Association.

He is survived by three sisters, Maggie Mason of Franklin, Betty Ann Worley of Otto and Amy Sue Cody of Franklin; two brothers, Curley Ledford of Otto and Thurman Eugene "Gene" Ledford of Franklin and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 14, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Rodriguez will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery.

Kenneth "Red" Ledford, age 81 of Hayesville, NC, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010 at his residence.

Kenneth was born in Clay County, NC to the late Richard and Lassie Mae (Donaldson) Ledford. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentacostal Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, David L Ledford, brothers, Arvil and Garland Ledford, sisters, Ruth Stamey, Opal Hughes and Betty Davis.

Kenneth was an avid hunter and fisherman, a very talented musician and loved his friends and fellow musicians at Penland's Store. He loved his great-grandchildren and loved to give them money.

Mrs. Sipes was a retired registered nurse with Gaston Memorial Hospital and a charter member of Bright Light Baptist Church in Bessemer City.

They have two daughters and 6 grandchildren.

Gary was born January 30, 1954, in Towns County, GA.
He first married Patty ?. No children.

She was the daughter of Bill and Charlotte Hancock.
Pat had a child from a previous marriage, and she and Gary had 2 children. They have 4 grandchildren.

Bonnilee Byers Ledford

Bonnliee Byers was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1898 in Clay County, NC, the youngest child of Zadie Ledford and Hicks Byers.

Bonnilee married Esther Penley Ledford on January 17, 1915, in Towns County, GA.

Penley was born on June 24, 1890 in Clay County, NC, the son of Joab Turner Ledford and Martha J. Isabella Reynolds.

Bonnilee and Penley were my great-Grandparents. I have fond memories of them both, and of visiting their farm in Hiawassee, Georgia during the summers as a young child.

Bonnilee had diabetes. Grannie said much of Sam's family had diabetes, his own son, Weaver, died of it at a fairly young age, and Gertie Burch's oldest son, Charles, Jr. had juvenile diabetes and died at age 15.

Penley died of natural causes/heart failure at home on December 13, 1975, and Bonnilee died on Mother's Day, May 8th, 1976. I don't know the cause of her death, but I remember that she was in the hospital at the time, so had apparently been ill at the time.
Both are buried in the Lower Bell Creek Cemetary in Hiawassee, Towns County, GA.

Bonnilee and Penley had 6 children:

The dark-haired lady to the far left is Bonnilee Byers Ledford, holding a baby Hazel, who was born December of 1917. She's still very small, and the weather is still obviously very cold.
The man next to her in the gigantimous hat is her husband Penley Ledford.
I don't know who the lady in the doorway is. I feel like it's someone related to Bonnilee, and her sister Gertie, but I think it's too old to be their mother, Zadie. I could be wrong about it being a relative of theirs, though.
The lady to the right of her is Gertie Byers Burch, and beside her is her husband Charlie.
I believe all the rest of the kids in the photo are Gertie and Charlie Burch's children. (That's what is wrote on the picture.)

This baby is Willamena Byers, daughter of John O. and Girlie Ashe Byers. She was born August August 25, 1920, and died on December 10, 1923 and is buried at New Ledford's Chapel Cemetary.

The girl in this photo is Abba Ruth (Abbaruth, or Abby Ruth) Cabe, daughter of Mary Byers and French Cabe.
The fellow is Dillard Moss. I don't know who Dillard Moss is.

Eliza Canzadie Ledford Byers

Eliza Canzadie Ledford, aka Zadie, was born November 24, 1867, daughter of Samuel Hamilton Ledford and Rutha M. Hill.

Zadie was my great-great-Grandmother.

She married J.H. (James? John?)(Hicks/Hix) Byers, who was born March 12, 1852.

According to the family, Hicks was from Texas, and he and his brother were raised by Warren and Nancy Triplett of Cherokee County, NC.
No one knows how Hicks and his brother ended up coming to NC, who their parents were, or why they were raised by the Tripletts.
It is said that Hicks' brother later went back to Texas and wasn't heard from again.

Hicks died October 27, 1900 of "Cramp Colic", aka Appendicitis.

After Hicks' death, Zadie married and divorced a Charlie Brown. They had a son also named Charlie Brown.

Zadie is remembered by her Grandchildren as being a strong, smart woman. She firmly believed in getting a good education and not drinking spirits. She was a real lady from the Victorian Era and was rarely seen without wearing a nicely pressed dress complete with petticoats and lace collar.

She was known as good Trader, buying sickly animals to fatten up and sell, as well as trading produce and even land.

Julia Ledford said, "Zadie could make the best Apple Stack pie of anyone. You cook dried apples, roll out rounds of dough, and layer apples, then crust, then apples, etc. into 6 or 7 layers."

Zadie died February 16, 1952 of a stroke.
She and Hicks Byers are buried at the (New) Ledford's Chapel Cemetary in Hayesville, Clay County, NC.

Samuel Hamilton Ledford was my great-great-great Grandfather.

From my Grannie's Photo Album:
This post-card type photo was in my Grannie's photo album, along with a hand-written-by-her note detailing who is (supposedly) in the photo.

In her notes, she named her great-Grandmother, Sam's wife, as Elizabeth (Eliza) Wood. I don't know where she got that name, nor I have ever run across it in any of my research (sometimes people got names mixed up and maybe named such like a brother's wife by mistake).
She also shows Ellen as having never married, but my notes says she married William Towery.

Neither the photo nor the note was dated.

Samuel Hamilton Ledford was born ca.1846 (in S.C.?) to Thomas Ledford and Eliza Tanner, and was the the grandson of Peter G. Ledford and (Martha?Nancy?Ann?Young?).
He died ca.1910, unknown location.

Samuel married Rutha M. Hill.

Ruth was born in Georgia ca.1847 to Jeremiah Hill (b.ca.1826 NC) and Mary ____ (b.ca.1827 GA). She died ca.1909, unknown location.

Sam and Ruth had 11 children:

My Ledford Family...er, Familys

The Ledfords were the first of my family lines that I began researching, because my Grannie and her Cousins were into tracing the family roots, and she eventually got me interested in it all. Sortof.

Anyway, her research was mostly centered on her Father's Ledford line, and her point seemed to be to connect her line with the Revolutionary War Hero, Peter G. Ledford.

Turned out, I was able to do that for her before she died....but not through her Father's line.

I researched the Ledfords for about a dozen years or so, up until a few years ago and life got too busy and hectic. Some of my info may be outdated, and more finds have been found since I last worked on it. So if anyone has any contributions, feel free to post a comment and let me know.

PLEASE NOTE! Although I have gotten Official Records when I could, probably at least 90% of my info was gleaned by hearsay and assumptions.
Unless there is an Official Record to back it up, don't write any information in stone, always be willing to keep an open mind, and willing to change your mind (with a good arguement).

PS. When I first started family reasearching (genealogy), I didn't know about citing references, so alot of my early info won't have any references. Sorry.
